Wells Reserve at Laudholm
If you want to experience a variety of Maine settings in one place, the Wells Reserve at Laudholm is a must visit location. In a matter of minutes you can see forests, fields, an apple orchard, marshes, and a beach overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Though all of these spots are within a short walk, you could easily fill hours on these grounds. The small admission fee is a great deal when you consider everything that is available for you to enjoy.
Despite many trips to Wells, this was my first time to visit the Laudholm Farm, but it isn’t new! It was added to the National Register of Historic Places over 35 years ago, and the farm itself has been in operation for hundreds of years.

Apart from its beauty, the thing that most struck me about this place was the role ordinary neighbors played in its preservation. Local residents put their hands together to restore the old farm and to prevent development from eradicating this historic gem. Today, the reserve encompasses 2,250 protected acres and is part of a national network dedicated to research, education, and conservation.

The reserve is considered a “living laboratory” with many educational activities, including a Coastal Training Program. The day I visited, a day camp was underway, as well as a conference for teachers. The parking lot was nearly full with these attendees and other visitors, but the grounds are so spacious that a quiet stroll was still possible.

The next time you are passing through Wells, this is a wonderful place to stretch your legs and enjoy the beauty of Maine.
