U = Union
The theme I chose for this April alphabet series was “This Maine Life.” As I considered letter “U,” I was reminded of my visit to the Union Fair (which is in the town of Union, if you aren’t aware). So much of our Maine way of life is celebrated at the agricultural fairs that are held throughout the state. Though there are many things that divide us these days, it is good to remember the factors that contribute to our Maine union.
Maine’s Natural Theatre
Most Mainers love the physical features of this state and enjoy being outside. Fairs are held outdoors, mostly in large fields and rural settings. Maine is so rich in natural resources and beauty. We don’t require a fancy building in order to have a good time.
Family Traditions
Fairs celebrate tradition. Attendees come and take part in the same activities, year after year. No one is expecting an altered schedule, nor would one would be welcome. Going to the fair is a familiar and well-loved ritual. It is a family-friendly event with every age group represented and something for each one.
Hard Work
Fairs honor the hard work that has been part of our culture for centuries. So many of the things that we raise and grow and make are submitted for show and competition. You can find it all — from pies and horses to pickles and hens. Farm life is valued, and 4-H students are praised.
Humor
Mainers are quite comfortable in their skin and don’t usually take themselves too seriously. Most can enjoy a good joke, even when it is on them. We are entirely at ease with having fun in silly ways. One illustration from the Union Fair: a highlight the day I visited was the lawnmower drag race. It was grand. Enough said.
