Garden Spot Farm in Pownal

Garden Spot Farm in Pownal

This post is being written on April 3.

It snowed this morning in Maine. By afternoon, it was 52 degrees.

Living in the country’s most northeastern state means spring can be slow to arrive.

No matter what is falling from the sky, signs of a new season can be found as close as your local greenhouse. For the third visit in my statewide adventure, I stopped by the Garden Spot Farm in Pownal. I had a wonderful taste of things to come as I strolled through rows and rows of beautiful growing treasures which were soaking up the sun and 80 degree temperatures inside the enclosed buildings. The store is almost ready to open for the season. What treats for the eyes are awaiting the customers!

This family business was founded by Dennis Peaslee, Sr. who loved to grow fresh vegetables. What began as a side hobby in the 1970s is now a flourishing company with eleven greenhouses and a summertime employment of up to twenty people. The founder’s son, Dennis, Jr., currently runs the operation.

Maybe it’s the long winters or the short growing season, but we sure do love our plants and flowers in Maine! Greenhouses provide us with a head start by having items in full bloom by the time spring rolls around. The only challenge one may find at a place like the Garden Spot Farm is trying to make a decision. They have 900 varieties of annuals and perennials, plus a wide selection of vegetables, shrubbery, and trees. Oh, and don’t forget the succulents!

Welcome, spring!
